Understanding the Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram, often referred to as an “echo,” is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the heart’s structure and function. Before Your Appointment
Before your echocardiogram appointment, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

• Follow Pre-Test Instructions: Your healthcare provider may provide specific instructions regarding eating, drinking, and medication usage before the test. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully to ensure accurate results.
• Wear Comfortable Clothing: You’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown for the procedure, so wear loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove.
• Bring a List of Medications: Make a list of all medications you’re currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, and bring it with you to your appointment.

During the Procedure

During the echocardiogram, you’ll be asked to lie on an examination table while a trained technologist performs the test. Here’s what you can expect:

• Placement of Electrodes: The technologist will attach sticky electrodes to your chest to monitor your heart’s electrical activity during the test.
• Application of Gel: A special gel will be applied to your chest to help transmit sound waves and improve the quality of the images.
• Use of Transducer: The technologist will place a small device called a transducer against your chest and move it around to capture images of different areas of your heart. You may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly to obtain clear images.
• Recording of Images: Throughout the procedure, the technologist will capture images of your heart in real-time, which will be displayed on a monitor for review by a cardiologist.

After the Procedure

Once the echocardiogram is complete, you’ll be able to resume your normal activities immediately. Your healthcare provider will review the images and discuss the results with you during a follow-up appointment. In some cases, additional tests or treatments may be recommended based on the findings of the echocardiogram.
